Men’s skincare is still a topic many guys avoid, mostly because they don’t know where to start. The truth is that an effective routine doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With three products and five minutes a day, you can notice a real difference in just a few weeks.

Why skincare is worth it

Men’s skin is, on average, 20 to 25% thicker than women’s and produces more sebum. That doesn’t mean it needs no care — it means it needs care in a different way. Frequent shaving causes micro-irritations that accumulate damage over time, and sun exposure without protection is the leading cause of premature visible aging.

The good news: three well-chosen steps solve 90% of the most common problems.

The three basic steps

1. Cleanse

The first step, and probably the most overlooked, is properly washing your face morning and night. Water alone isn’t enough — it doesn’t remove sebum, dirt, or sunscreen residue.

What to look for in a cleanser: it should clean without leaving skin feeling tight or shiny. Tightness after washing means the product is disrupting your skin barrier.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser is the most dermatologist-recommended cleanser for normal to oily skin. Its ceramide formula deep-cleans without compromising the skin barrier. It’s the perfect starting point.

2. Moisturize

After cleansing, skin needs hydration. Many men with oily skin skip this step thinking their skin already has enough oil — but that’s a mistake. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, and when it is, it produces even more oil as compensation.

What to look for: lightweight texture, fast absorption, no sticky feeling.

If you’re over 25 or spend time outdoors, consider getting a moisturizer with SPF to combine steps 2 and 3 in one. Neutrogena SPF 50 Men Face Moisturizer is a solid choice: ultra-lightweight texture and broad-spectrum sun protection with no greasy finish.

If you prefer a non-SPF moisturizer for nighttime or indoor days, Nivea Men Active Energy is hard to beat for the price. With caffeine and guarana, it’s especially useful during periods of poor sleep.

3. Protect from the sun

If there’s only one thing you’re going to do for your skin, make it sunscreen every day. 80% of visible skin aging (wrinkles, dark spots, loss of firmness) is caused by cumulative UV radiation over the years.

This includes cloudy days and winter months: UVA radiation penetrates clouds and causes long-term aging regardless of the season.

If you’re using Neutrogena SPF 50 as your moisturizer, you’ve already covered this step.

Full routine in 5 minutes

Morning:

  1. Wash your face with the cleanser (30 seconds)
  2. Apply SPF moisturizer (30 seconds)

Evening:

  1. Wash your face with the cleanser (30 seconds)
  2. Apply a non-SPF moisturizer if you have one, or the same SPF formula

What comes next

Once you have these three steps integrated into your routine, you can start adding targeted products: an eye cream if dark circles concern you, a vitamin C serum to even skin tone, or a gentle exfoliator once a week.

But don’t rush. Consistency with the basics always beats variety in the complicated.
